About IP addresses

What is an IP address?

A numeric identifier that tells other machines where to send the reply. Two common forms: IPv4 and IPv6.

IPv4 vs IPv6

IPv4 is exhausted at the public pool. Many networks still egress on IPv4, so “IPv6 not detected” is normal.

Public vs private

Sites see the public address. 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x, and fc00::/7 are local only.

What can an IP reveal?

Usually country, approximate city, ISP, and connection type. Not a street address, name, or browsing history.

FAQ

01How accurate is geolocation?

Country is usually solid. City is often the ISP hub, not the street you are on.

02Can someone find my house from an IP?

Not to street level. Only the ISP can map a timestamp to a subscriber, typically under legal process.

03Why is the city wrong?

Proxies, VPNs, anycast, CGNAT, and enterprise links all shift the library’s pin. Read ASN first.

04Where do the security signals come from?

Proxy, hosting, and mobile signals come from GeoIP data; VPN names use ISP and organization text; Tor uses the public exit list. A clean result is not a guarantee.

05Is this free?

The lookup is free and does not require an account. History stays in your browser.
